The way we’ve organized events as Startup Weekend had always been the same. Book a venue, gather enthusiastic people and let them co-create. But how do you organize a collaborative event in a time of social distancing? Take it completely online.
As the local organizer of Startup Weekend, we were thrilled when TechStars started the global initiative to boost the development of new business ideas that will help us tackle the pandemic faster and better. With a short deadline and completely different circumstances, we still managed to organize the first Online Startup Weekend Skopje – Covid-19 Edition.

Organizing an online event that requires continuous communication, teamwork, feedback sessions, and live pitching is no easy task, but doing it in just 3 weeks was quite a challenge. Still, thanks to Techstars, we were equipped with all the necessary tools to organize a completely digital event, and we were able to join over 50 counties around the world who were part of the Covid-19 Online Startup Weekend initiative.
Because the event was completely online, anyone from anywhere in North Macedonia could participate, which also made this event a truly unique national experience. With support from 12 other organizations, the 26 mentors, and the 40 amazing participants, this event was a huge success and provided a great platform for innovative ideas to flourish and develop – at a time when they were needed the most.
